Major Accomplishments of Friends of Pathways
and the Jackson Hole Community Pathways Program

 

Friends of Pathways (FOP) is a non-profit organization and community advocate for all aspects of bicycling, walking, and trails.  Since 1994, we have worked to enhance and connect the communities in the Jackson Hole region by promoting safe and convenient non-motorized transportation and recreation.

2007

  • Friends of Pathways leads successful state lobby effort to change WY mandatory sidepath law.
  • FOP helps Town of Jackson revise Scenic Grant to provide $1 million for north Cache and future path to Grand Teton National Park.
  • FOP/USFS completes successful 5-year Challenge Cost Share for Greater Snow King Area Trails.
  • FOP/USFS trail crew begins major 2-year Teton Pass trails projects. Trail Ambassadors program expands to two FOP/FS crew.
  • NPS approves park pathways; FOP holds first Celebration Ride and Walk in partnership with Grand Teton National Park, starts Grand Teton Pathway Stewardship Fund.
  • FOP Launches campaign for WY-22 Pathway.
  • FOP and School District start new partnership for Safe Routes to School; win $30,000 federal grant.
  • WY Legislature approves removal of mandatory sidepath law, enhances rights of bicycles and improves path safety.
  • National Park Service approves 41.3-mile pathway system in Grand Teton Transportation Plan record of decision.
  • WY-22 Pathway Science School Connector under construction and Melody Ranch South Park Loop Pathway under construction.
  • Town and County start pathway design for 4 mile pathway from north Cache Street in Jackson to Grand Teton.
  • School District, JH Community Pathways, FOP win Safe Routes to School federal grant.
  • New Teton Village access Pathway under construction to connect Moose Wilson Trail to Teton Village.
  • Town of Jackson wins Silver Level Bicycle Friendly Community Award by League of American Bicyclists.

2006

  • FOP led campaign in support of successful pathway SPET ballot issue
  • Dave Vandenberg leaves and FOP hires Tim Young as new executive director November 2006.
  • FOP/USFS Greater Snow King trail work continues.
  • FOP starts Sidepath law change project.
  • SPET Tax overwhelmingly approved for South Park Pathways, $1 million.
  • Senator Thomas secures second $4 million for Grand Teton Pathways
  • Jim Chandler leaves Pathways position; Brian Schilling hired as new Pathways Director August 2006.

2005

  • FOP advocates for pathways system in Grand Teton with NPCA
  • Ferin’s Trail completed, FOP/USFS trail crew lead project managers.
  • Senator Thomas secures $4 million federal funding for future Grand Teton Pathways
  • JH Golf and Tennis Spring Gulch Pathway completed 1 mile.

2004

  • FOP helps celebration for Moose-Wilson Trail completion.
  • FOP helps raise private funds for amenities on Moose-Wilson Trail.
  • FS/FOP Snow King work continues, many trails reconstructed on Snow King.
  • Moose-Wilson Trail completed, 6.6 miles new pathway along WY-390.
  • Pathways reorganized under Town of Jackson as joint program with Teton County.
  • Senator Thomas secures $4 million for future Grand Teton Pathways.
  • 3-Creeks Pathway completed on South Park Loop.

2003

  • FOP hires Chris Peck for Greater Snow King Trails network, many trails reconstructed on Snow King.
  • Friends of Pathways joins efforts to create Grand Teton Pathways system.
  • Jim Chandler hired as Pathway Coordinator
  • High School and Elementary School Pathways completed, 1 new mile, Safe Routes to School

2002

  • FOP wins Bikes Belong $10,000 grant, pays for Teton Village mountain bike trails.
  • FOP advocates for pathways staff position to be filled by town and county.
  • US Forest Service and FOP sign Challenge Cost Share agreement, begin 5-year trails partnership.
  • Moose-Wilson Trail design completed and approvals secured for construction
  • Tim Young leaves County-Town Pathways Position
  • Fifth Nordic Trail Grooming Grant awarded
  • Bikes Belong Grant awarded for Teton Village Mountain bike trails

2001

  • FOP supported the Henry’s Trail construction and contributed to Wilson Centennial Trail restroom.
  • FOP helped lead the Action Jackson forum on Pathways in Jackson Hole. 400 people filled Snow King in support of Pathways.
  • FOP was a leader in Grand Teton Study
  • FOP lobbied for successful SPET tax for Teton Village Road pathway.
  • FOP helped support the Nordic Grooming program.
  • FOP lobbied for continuing the Town/County Pathways Department.
  • Henry’s Trail completed, 1 mile section crosses landslide, connects to Old Henry’s Road
  • Wilson Centennial Trail Restroom structure and wetland pond overlook landscaping finished
  • GTNP Transportation Study completed, recommends pathways
  • Voters approve SPET Tax for Moose-Wilson Trail, highest favorable vote of all 11 ballot issues, used to match Federal Grant
  • Be Today’s Solution Campaign year 3
  • Town completes Kelly Avenue Sidewalk project
  • Fourth Nordic Trail Grooming Grant awarded
  • High School Safe Routes School Trail Grant awarded and design complete
  • Fall 2001 Teton County restructures pathways and eliminates Pathway Department.

2000

  • FOP plays major role in favorable bike/ped goals in County/Town Transportation plan
  • FOP raises funds toward the Garaman Park pathway enhancements.
  • FOP helps advocate for sidewalks in Town during street charrettes
  • FOP completed Wilson Centennial Trail private donations of $50,000.
  • Town / County pass Transportation Plan Chapter 8 which includes strong Bicycle and pedestrian support
  • Wyoming Transportation Commission re-designates Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway
  • USDOT awards $2.6 million Scenic Byway Grant for north Jackson on Cache Street
  • Garaman Trail Crabtree/Flat Creek park completed
  • Be Today’s Solution Campaign year 2
  • Town completes Snow King Avenue Sidewalk project
  • Willow Street Charrette Street planning conducted
  • Cache Street Charrette Street planning conducted

1999

  • FOP lead community group supporting Ski Hill Road bike lanes in FHWA project.
  • FOP lead community advocate for sidewalks and bike lanes on West Broadway project.
  • FOP helped fund Nordic Grooming for Cache Creek and other areas.
  • Friends of Pathways raised private donations towards the Wilson Centennial Trail and amenities.
  • Pathway Charrette, Ski Hill Road adds bike lanes from Driggs to Alta
  • Wyoming Centennial Scenic Byway Corridor Management Plan final
  • West Broadway Charrette planning conducted,
  • Jackson-South Pathway constructed by WYDOT, 4 miles added
  • Second Nordic Trail Grooming Grant awarded
  • Wilson Centennial Trail Award, one of best USDOT Enhancements in Country

  • FOP helps advocate Teton Pines pathway be constructed.
  • FOP helps raise funding for Crabtree Lane pathway bridge to Russ Garaman trail connection.
  • 1 mile of Moose-Wilson pathway Teton Pines section 
  • Moose-Wilson Trail receives TEA-21 High Priority funding $1.5 million
  • Crabtree Lane Pathway Bridge constructed
  • Wilson Centennial Trail - 2 Miles of pathway constructed
  • First Nordic Trail Grooming Grant, purchased Pisten-Bully

1997

  • FOP successfully lobbies WYDOT to approve West Broadway Underpass
  • FOP raises $10,000 private cost share for Jackson-Moose Pathway Study.
  • FOP Gift Catalog developed for donations
  • First “Adopt a Trail” initiated by FOP
  • FOP helps fund Travel Study $3,500
  • Melody Ranch Scenic Trail constructed - 2 miles of pathway
  • West Broadway Underpass completed for Garaman Trail
  • Jackson to Moose Scenic Pathway Conceptual Study completed

1996

  • FOP assists with Russ Garaman gift of quarter million dollar for first pathway.
  • FOP raises additional $55,000 private donations for first Jackson Pathways.
  • FOP raises $10,000 for pathway maintenance,
  • Russ Garaman Trail, School Trail, Indian Springs Trail constructed First 4 miles of pathways in Jackson
  • Teton Pass Recreational Trail Project, Old Pass Road repaired, trail work and signs
  • JH Pathways wins Scenic Byway Grant for Melody trail

1995

  • First paid FOP Executive Director hired, Mike Geraci establishes new non-profit
  • Major fundraising campaign successful for first pathways, Garaman gift over $300,000
  • FOP Advocates for first 4 miles
  • FOP starts Save a Space and Pedestrian award program
  • US Department of Energy Award given to Tim Young for work on Jackson Hole Community Pathways
  • Construction started on Russ Garaman Trail and bridges

  • Friends of Pathways incorporated October 1994
  • Indian Springs Trail ISTEA Demonstration Grant for
  • Cache Creek Trail Project started with Recreational Trail Grant, Trailhead relocated, new bridges and trail work completed
  • Pathways Director position established, Tim Young first Director.

  • First Federal Enhancement grants awarded for Garaman and School Trails, ISTEA funding

1992

 

  • Pathways in Jackson Hole Conceptual Plan completed, wins American Planning Association Award for Excellence
  • Tim Young hired as consultant to advance first pathways

1991

  • Future FOP founders served on first Pathways Task Force.
  • Pathways Task Force Formed by Town and County Government, group of 19 help start pathways program, Tim Young first Chairman

1983

  • Community support for bicycling and walking dates back early in Jackson Hole
  • Jackson/Teton Bicycle Project – Jackson’s first bicycle and pedestrian plan is published, first bike route signed on Snow King extension project, but limited local government staff follow-up, effort faded

1977
