START BIKE FIELD TRIAL

Think of it like a beta test. In the summer of 2017, Start Bike will be testing a new product from BCycle called the Dash. The Dash is a smart bike with all of the brains built into the bike, not into the station. BCycle has chosen Jackson as the first community to get the Dash bike. In return, Start Bike will host the field trial with 20 bikes on the street where final testing of the system will take place. By participating in the field trial you will help to work out any bugs in time for the launch of a production system in 2018 with 50 bikes and 17 stations.

Bike Share History

Friends of Pathways has been working since 2010 to bring a permanent bike sharing system to downtown Jackson Hole. In 2011, Friends of Pathways and Alta Planning & Design developed a feasibility study for Bike Share. The study showed that the program would work, but bike lane improvements would greatly increase ridership. As a result, a Bicycle Improvement Plan was developed, adopted and implemented by the Town of Jackson.

After multiple improvements, such as bike lanes, formal bike routes and signs, Friends of Pathways conducted a three-week long demonstration of a Bike Share system in 2015. 891 trips were taken for a total of 2,119 miles by 392 people.

In the spring of 2016, Energy Conservation Works unanimously approved a motion to recommend that the Town of Jackson move forward with the Bike Share program using SPET funding for 47% of the capital costs, securing matching funds from other sources.  START Bike is a program of START bus.

Last Night, the Jackson Town Council approved a grant from Energy Conservation Works of $70,000 toward the capital expenses to develop a permanent Bike Share program for Jackson.

Bike Share is a healthy, sustainable, and affordable form of public transportation, which would complement Jackson’s current START system by making it easier for people to get to and from START bus stops and move around town without a car.

For locals and area businesses, a permanent Bike Share program has the potential to:

  • Reduce traffic congestion in summer months
  • Alleviate parking challenges for both employees & visitors
  • Supplement other forms of public transit
  • Curb carbon emissions & reduce gas consumption

Energy Conservation Works sees the Bike Share as one part of a successful program to reduce emissions from transportation. We commend the Town Council and ECW’s Board for their role in moving forward options to increase mobility in downtown Jackson during our busiest summer months.

Energy Conservation Works’ mission is to provide leadership, implementation and education specific to energy conservation, sustainability and efficiency projects. One of their goals is to reduce emissions from transportation.

With only one week remaining in the FREE Bike Share demonstration, the program has received great reviews from locals, visitors and area businesses. Participants have been using the bikes to commute to work, run errands around town and avoid summer traffic and parking downtown.

In this week’s Jackson Hole News & Guide, one supporter said, “It’s a great thing to have around town — very convenient.”
