A Note from the National Bike Summit

Washington, D.C.  The National Bike Summit kicked of last night in Washington DC with a record of nearly 800 bicycle advocates attending from all 50 states. Keynote speaker US Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood wowed a packed room at the opening dinner, declaring "You have a full partner at DOT".  Secretary LaHood challenged all of us to seek political support as we head to meetings with our Congressional delegations up on Capital Hill, saying "It takes political leadership to make this happen".

On Thursday, a contingent of cycling supporters will be meeting with all our Wyoming Delegation - Senator John Barrasso, Senator Mike Enzi, and Representative Cynthia Lummis.

This year's theme, Acting on a Simple Solution, could hardly be more timely. Bicycling is economical, efficient, clean, and sustainable. The level of investment needed to get more people riding is small and offers big returns. Riding a bike frees people from car, gas, and insurance payments; it frees the nation from costly oil imports from volatile corners of the world. Bicycling is the ultimate expression of freedom and independence and the simple pleasure of riding a bike harkens back to simpler times. It’s fun, and its good for you. What’s not to like about that?
