Bicycling and Walking in Winter!

Mayor Mark Barron, and his 'Townie' out enjoying a trip across town.

With the days just a little bit longer, the weather just a little bit warmer – and now some great storms coming through – you’ve likely seen more and more people out running errands, commuting, and getting to social events by walking and biking around town.  It’s probably easier than you realize to join them; here’s what Jackson’s Mayor, Mark Barron (pictured above), had to say recently:

‘Walking and bicycling the streets of Jackson during the winter offers me a unique perspective, a slower pace to the day, and just a bit of exercise during the colder and even snowier months.  It's not as if I take the opportunity to ride my ‘Townie with studded tires every day - I admit that sub-zero weather isn't my speed on the bike!  But with the right equipment under my buns and the right clothing on my buns, winter bicycling and walking offers a peaceful, easy way to commute around town.  Sure it may take a couple of more minutes in prep time, but with the added benefits, it's well worth it!

Mark’s ‘Townie’ is certainly a nice setup, and there are many other creative solutions available to those who’ve chosen not to put the bike away, simply because there’s a bit of white stuff on the ground.  Feel free to stop by Friends of Pathways’ offices to take a look at Tim’s winter bike setup – you’d be surprised at how a few, easy modifications can keep you safe as you pedal town in winter.  All of our local bike shops carry accessories to get you going, and would be happy to help outfit you and make helpful suggestions for your specific needs.

And don’t forget, Teton County’s START bus system is as accessible as ever – whether you just need a short hop across town, are heading to Teton Village for the skiing, or to Smith’s, Albertson’s, Whole Grocer, or K-Mart for shopping – there’s an inexpensive and consistently run route to get you there.

Finally, drop us a note or comment below, and let us know about your tips, tricks, routes, and rides that you use to get where you need to go during winter without getting in the car!
