Report from FOP Trail Crew member, Mike Piker:
I was on Arrow today to assess the progress of the melt out. Wow! It is still going to be a long time. I hiked about a 1/2 mile past Waldo's bridge before I lost the trail. The bridge is finally visible but just barely. See photos below. The creek under the bridge is raging and much of it is running under natural snow bridges up stream. Very dangerous if you are not aware the creek is there. There are several trees down as expected and I suspect more will be found once the deep snow melts out.
Beyond the bridge there are some patches of dry trail in sunny clearings. However, when you enter the timber it is a different world. I estimate areas of 3' - 5' or more over the tread in some of the shady areas. As I was looking for the tread I post holed almost to my armpits in one spot.
I had plans to hike to the Phillips junction to assess the upper section of that trail but decided against it after I lost the trail, the wind was blowing down trees and I was post holing on a regular basis.
With the warm weather things are melting quickly. Nevertheless, I think it could be 10 days to two weeks before Arrow is ready.
To be continued...
